AMMAN, Jordan (FBW)It is an oasis in the
Middle Easta haven for Muslims and
Christians, Arabs and Anglos, boys and girls. It
is the Baptist School of Amman, dedicated in 1974
high atop one of the seven hills in the Al Rabia
area of Amman where a small cluster of buildings
inside a high white wall now houses over a
thousand students.

not that unusual to talk about establishing
Baptist schools and other ministries throughout
the Middle East and in North Africa. But sometime
along the way, interest has dwindled as political
tensions have made life and work difficult in
those regions-and the encroaching fundamentalism
of many of those countries has created almost
impenetrable barrier

of vehicles across the Arabian desert, relief
workers who had been scheduled to go into Iraq,
but instead were diverted to Jordan, prayed

can no longer pretend that Muslims live on the
other side of the world or that what they believe
doesnt affect them, states June Hunt,
nationally-syndicated radio host of Hope for the
Heart, in the foreword to Voices Behind the
Veil, a new release from Kregel Publications.
Since most Christians feel illequipped to
witness to followers of Islam, she argues for
learning more about the Muslim mindset in order
to speak to their minds and their hearts.

of a day many remember as a turning point for
America, Baptist relief workers in the Middle
East brought a message of hope and reconciliation
Sept. 11 as they delivered food and supplies to
Iraqi and other refugees living in Jordan.

Carolina, in Jordan to provide assistance to

has been praying for Iraqi babies for about six
months now. And for the past several weeks his
prayer has also included a petition for his dads
safety.

Baptist relief volunteers from Florida, Texas,
Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina entered this
Middle Eastern city Sept. 3 where the radiant sun
beats down on white buildings carved into seven
hills rising out of fine bleached desert sand.
