JACKSONVILLE (FBW)—Several Florida Baptist churches celebrated Easter in sanctuaries that are newly repaired and remodeled from summer hurricane damage. Eastside Baptist Church in Milton met for the first time in its partly repaired sanctuary and First Baptist Church, Lake Worth, showed off its completed, repaired and re-modeled buildings Easter, March 27. Other churches are still waiting for repairs to be completed.

JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—When the eye of Hurricane Charley bore down on the Arcadia home of Pastor Ken Galloway eight months ago, the storm knocked down his brick fence and smashed the chimney onto the roof tearing holes through the shingles, ceiling and sheetrock. Then the winds of hurricanes Frances and Jeanne slashed across the home from the east coast, causing further damage.

Disaster relief: Baptist volunteer records tallied in ‘04

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (BP)—Southern Baptist Disaster Relief responses in 2004 reached an all-time high, including record numbers for meals prepared, buildings repaired and cleanup and recovery projects. More than 15,000 trained Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers gave their time, talents and energies in response to 193 natural disasters which included hurricanes, an earthquake, floods, tornadoes and ice storms.

‘Extreme Faith’ seeks workers at First Baptist, Cocoa Beach

COCOA BEACH (FBW)-During what First Baptist Church, Cocoa Beach, is calling “Extreme Faith - Renovate Our Church,” members and other volunteers plan to work 24/7 to repair and renovate 30,000 square feet in three buildings. Church leadership is seeking volunteers to work during its “two-week window” May 2-14.

Florida relief donations total $1.4 million

JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—The Florida Baptist Convention has received more than $1.4 million in disaster relief funds for victims of Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. The total includes designated and undesignated gifts and a contribution of $300,000 received from the North American Mission Board’s disaster relief fund.

Churches learn to negotiate insurance after hurricanes

ORLANDO (FBW)—The damage caused by hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne has led church pastors and leaders into a maze of insurance claims, negotiations and settlements. Pastors, while still comforting and counseling church members who suffered losses in the storms, also must try to rally church members to replenish church coffers which took a hit from cancelled Sunday services.

Ridge Association celebrates 50th anniversary after hurricanes

HAINES CITY (FBW)—Ridge Baptist Association celebrated its 50th Anniversary Oct. 21 at Eastside Baptist Church, Haines City. The 62 congregations, although still reeling from the destruction caused in the area by hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne, gathered to praise God for His provision during their association’s 50 years.

Pastor says relief efforts help earn ‘right to be heard’

PENSACOLA (FBW)-Pastor Ron Lentine wasn’t campaigning for either presidential candidate the evening of Nov. 2. Instead, he and about 40-50 FAITH trained partners from Myrtle Grove Baptist Church canvassed nearby neighborhoods to follow-up after more than two months of steady relief to those hit hard by Hurricane Ivan.

JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—Though the “ravages” of four hurricanes have spurred a wounded sense of security in many Floridians, $1 million in donations to the Convention’s disaster relief fund illustrates the faith of God’s children in the weather-beaten state.

Over 200 church buildings damaged in hurricanes

JACKSONVILLE (FBC) — A total 202 Florida Baptist church buildings sustained varying degrees of damage – from minimal to completely destroyed – as a result of the four hurricanes that passed across Florida between August 13 and September 26. In addition, two Baptist affiliated properties sustained damage. These were Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center and the Florida Baptist Retirement Center, Vero Beach. The updated reported was compiled by Florida Baptist Convention staff based upon on-site assessments and reports from directors of missions and pastors.

As was the case on Sept. 3 before Hurricane Frances hit, the Family Life Center of First Baptist Church of Vero Beach sheltered the center’s residents and staff.

His routine almost took away the sting of having to stand in the heat of the noonday for nearly an hour to get a hot meal.

Initial indicators are that 31 Florida Baptist church buildings, and four pastors’ homes were damaged by Hurricane Ivan.
