Florida Baptist communicators receive honors

MOBILE, ALA. (FBC)—The staff of the Florida Baptist Convention's Public Relations Division received accolades for professional achievements from the Baptist Communicators Association during the 2007 Wilmer C. Fields Awards competition Friday, April 13 at the Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile, Ala.

The annual communication arts competition involved nearly 400 entries judged by secular and non-profit organization media specialists. The seven major divisions of the competition included: public relations, interactive communications, audio/visual, photography, feature writing, news writing and graphic design. Within each division a variety of sub-categories of awards were given.

In other business, BCA elected Barbara Denman, director of Florida Baptists' Communication Department as president-elect of the Southern Baptist organization which represents nearly 290 Baptist communications specialists who work in national and state agencies.

The Florida staff received 11 awards ranging from first place to honorable mention for several print and video media products produced in 2006.

Denman and Lauren Urtel, communications specialist, received a first place award in the Newsletter category for the quarterly publication, Florida Missions Today.

Denman also received a second place award in the feature writing division for a series of articles related to the 2006 Florida Baptist State Convention meeting titled, "Rivers of Revival."

The Public Relations Division was awarded a second place in Total Publication or Development Campaign for the "2006 Maguire State Mission Offering" promotion. The campaign included a variety of printed and audio-visual materials produced in three languages to raise $1,439,000 for the statewide offering.

The staff of the Media Services Department, Ty Wood, director, and Deanne Carter, media producer, collectively received seven awards for various video products they wrote and produced.

In the Video Feature Production for Broadcast category, Carter received a first place award for the video, "A Gift of a Second Chance." The video segment featured a woman whose life was spiritually changed by an Orlando ministry. In the same category, Wood received the Second Place award for the video segment, "Welcome to the Florida Mission Field."

In the category Video Feature Production, Non-Broadcast (more than 15 minutes), Carter and Wood shared a first place award for the video series, "Rivers of Revival" which were opening video segments for the state convention annual meeting. The two also received honorable mention for their quarterly video production, "Crossroads, Winter 2006."

In the Video PSA or Commercial category, Wood's volunteer enlistment promotional video on "Disaster Relief" received a Second Place award. And a Promotional Video titled, "Rivers of Revival: African-American Ministries," produced by Carter was awarded an honorable mention.

A music video titled, "Here I Am," written and produced by Wood was awarded a second place. The video was the closing segment in the Maguire State Mission Offering promotion video. Additionally Wood received a second place award for a script he wrote as a freelance project.
