Florida Evangelism Conference: 'The Cross' gives inspiration

BRANDON (FBC)—Steadfastly holding to the biblical truth, "The cross makes the difference," nearly 1,500 persons attending the Florida Baptist Evangelism Conference were challenged anew to reach their communities and state with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

TALLAHASSEE (FBW)—With Florida's newly-elected Governor Charlie Crist on board, social conservatives will be eyeing the governor and Florida's lawmakers closely in the next two months—keeping watch especially on the Senate which has shifted to a more moderate stance after last year's election.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BP)—At the foot of Albuquerque's snow-capped Sandia Mountains at Hoffmantown Church, 128 new Southern Baptist missionaries and chaplains were commissioned for service by the North American Mission Board Feb. 25. It was the second-largest missionary commissioning in NAMB history.

GRAPEVINE, Texas (BP)—In a joint announcement March 12, Arlington, Texas, pastor Dwight McKissic and the officers of the board of trustees at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary announced they "have agreed to meet privately and confidentially" and "also agreed to table any recommended action against Rev. McKissic," a first-year board member.

Lillian Isaacs, literacy pioneer, dies at 88 in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE (FBW)—Lillian Isaacs, North American missionary and pioneer in literacy missions, died March 2 in Tallahassee. She was 88. She taught thousands of people to read through literacy programs in churches from Kentucky to Alaska, and promoted literacy missions in workshops for teachers nationwide.
