JACKSONVILLE

Vernon Johns, pastor 40 years of churches in Florida and Georgia, died Dec. 16. He most recently served as pastor of Terry Road Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He was co-founder and president of Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary, and also served as chaplain of the Jacksonville Police Reserves 20 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ramona; son, Larry; daughter, Gwendolyn Strickland; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Palm Valley Baptist Church, Ponte Vedra, has called Rob Worthington as minister of music. He is a graduate of Carson Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn., and teaches at The School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine. He has previously served churches in St. Augustine and Palatka. He and his wife, Connie, have one son. Worthington will be welcomed to the church in a special music service Jan. 30 at 6 p.m.
