OLLIE NORTH

‘Never repented’?

As I recall, Oliver North lied under oath to the Congress. So far as I know, he never repented. If that is true, I don’t believe you should be giving him the time of day by favorably reviewing his novel (Witness, Oct. 2).

REVIVALS

‘Prayer’ is preparation

For those who suggest "revivals just don’t work anymore," let me say the opposite is true. Pine Grove Baptist Church in Lake City recently hosted vocational evangelist Don Walton of Time for Truth Ministries, and indeed, we experienced true revival. Relationships were healed, the joy of the Lord was present in each service, and the Spirit of God moved mightily among those present. Preparations for revival included the most basic ingredient, prayer and more prayer. Men of the church gathered each Sunday morning for a year to specifically pray for revival, and a deacon-led, 24-hour day of prayer was held in anticipation of what God would do. In addition, a 12-hour period of prayer, led by the deacons, was held the day prior to beginning services.

Allow me to suggest something very simple if you seek the revival every believer and every church needs. Contact Bro. Don Walton to schedule a revival (352-238-1279). Bro. Walton is a man with a love for the church, a keen desire to help pastors, and a passion for revival. Then begin the process of calling out to God for revival. Begin the preparation period with prayer, busy yourself with the business of prayer and continue praying until you have the answer from heaven.

For those who say "revivals just don’t work anymore," cry out to God for the revival you desire, and see what He will do.

BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE

‘Attitudes’ can bless

I have been privileged to attend eight world congresses of the Baptist World Alliance, the first being in Cleveland in 1950. My first assignment for the BWA was at the Miami Beach congress in 1965, and except for one quinquennium I have had a responsibility with the BWA since 1968. I have attended BWA meetings on six continents.

The BWA has welcomed into its membership any convention or union that evidences adherence to the core beliefs shared by Baptists. The BWA General Council is a representative body with membership allocated according to church membership. The Southern Baptist Convention has the largest number of members, 17. Each of the 211 unions or conventions has at least one member on the General Council.

Baptist leaders outside North America have tended to have a basic gratitude to the SBC for its expansive missionary work. Many conventions and unions originated from the work of Southern Baptist missionaries, while others derived from the missionary work of British, American (formerly Northern), Canadian, Swedish, Australian, or New Zealand Baptists.

But also during recent years these same overseas leaders have come to fear and resist what they perceive as neo-colonialist tendencies from the SBC, according to which they feel they have become less than equal brothers and sisters in the worldwide Baptist brotherhood at the very time when the BWA has become more global than ever.

Mistaken attitudes and policies can be disastrous for Baptist unity and evangelization, whereas truly Christian and biblical attitudes and actions can be a decisive blessing, opening new doors in the unfolding twenty-first century.

MISSIONS

Bypassing Christmas gifts

It is heart breaking to read that the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering goal was not met, resulting in the postponement of missionaries ready to serve our Lord through foreign missions.

After many years with volunteer short-term mission work in Honduras and Nicaragua, I have seen first hand the need for and use of this offering.

God has laid on my heart to ask my four children to give the money they would spend for my Christmas present this year to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering (2003).

I am not rich by any means by American standards–however, I am rich in God’s grace & love and people all over the world deserve to know He loves them too.

I challenge Southern Baptist everywhere to sacrifice (stuff) for the spreading of God’s Word and His love. (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19-20.)
